Our Core Values

INCLUSIVITY
COMMUNITY
ACCESSIBILITY

Why these are our goals

At Stuyvesant, we strive for inclusivity, community, and accessibility to ensure all students have the resources to make meaningful progress during high school while balancing their work with their personal lives and mental health in these unprecedented times.

How we will reach these goals

Our policies are made to shed light on issues that are often overlooked by faculty and administration. As co-presidents of the Sophomore Caucus, we promise to use our platform to implement innovative ways to spread kindness at Stuyvesant.

INCLUSIVITY

When the Alvarez-Chan campaign represents Stuyvesant sophomores, it represents all of the sophomore student body. Through our goal of Inclusivity, we aim uplift the voices of minority students and ensure that no one goes unheard.

Reporting homophobia, racism, especially in social media
  • Encourage students to report hate speech in social media to us, guidance counselors, and teachers
  • Allow reports to be anonymous (google form on our website) as long as there is substantial evidence that proves someone’s actions
  • Do not punish hate speech lightly
Providing resources through social media + newsletter
  • Post weekly (ex: “small ways to be an ally to LGBT,” “safe ways to protest for BLM”, ways to educate yourself)
  • Petitions on social media and in newsletter
Work with clubs in stuy that have already put in the work for our purposes, so we know exactly what the student body needs
  • ex: BSL, NAACH, StuySmile
The 5 Intelligences
  • There are 5 general types of learners, each learner benefiting from a different studying/teaching style
  • Use social media to bring awareness to different types of learners and how to categorize your own learning style
COMMUNITY

The overarching goal of student government is to organize events for the student body. However, COVID-19 creates an unprecedented situation for connecting students to one another. The Alvarez-Chan ticket challenges these new obstacles presented by remote learning. Our Community policies create opportunities for Stuyvesant sophomores to get virtually involved and to have fun while doing it.

Virtual Dances/Game Nights
  • Gather.town - Uses a map that allows users to move their characters around and engage in conversation with other characters in their proximity, just like in real life!
  • Games like Psych and jackbox.tv
Pegleg of the Week
  • Students nominate other students for fun accomplishments (ex: Jane finished binging The Office this week!)
  • Students message our Instagram account with the name of the Pegleg, their accomplishment, and an image of them
  • Winners will be featured in an Instagram post and all submissions will be featured in an Instagram story!
Teacher’s Assistants
  • Students that have already taken the class serve as teacher’s assistants that work with teachers to answer questions about deadlines, homework help, and concepts
  • Offers leadership opportunities and work/volunteer experience
Create collaborative playlists for different moods
  • Research by the Canadian University in Dubai found that 70 per cent of students who listened to music and received encouragement from teachers before an exam did better than those who did not.
ACCESSIBILITY

As sophomore caucus, we plan to use our platform to spread information in an organized way. We believe that verified information and easy-to-follow layouts are crucial for a true understanding of what is being presented. Our policies under the Accessibility goal specify what type of information to expect from our ticket and the methods we will use to distribute it.
